I didn’t post for quite a while, but I’m back. I was sort of discouraged by the amount of visitors and was thinking of a good way to attract visitors. I was planning to do a bunch of articles and tutorials, instead of doing this kind of “recycling culture”. Essentially the type of blogging I do boils down to gathering information from different sites, which I think are interesting myself, and add them to my blog. Sometimes with a little bit of my own thoughts between it, but there’s actually not more to it then gathering information.

But I don’t feel entirely satisfied doing this.

And I feel the type Wordpress is set up, the content that should be put here should be richer in content. Tumble-logging, as evidenced in sites like tumblr.com are more suitable for the recycle culture. You stumble upon something, whether it be a website, music, a video, a picture or whatever, tumble logs are suitable for quick and dirty posting for stuff you stumble upon. There’s nothing creative in it and actually nothing new, except for content of the collection.

As I’m not interested in diary-style blogs (as in “this-is-what-I’ve-done-today”-posts), I’m currently busy with some posts which will be unique – as in non-recycled-information. So for the people who actually do visit this, there will be some better content in the feature.

But as for now, I’m holding on my standard type of blogging: interesting stuff I’ve found on the Internet will be posted here on http://www.leiseus.net/journal, more personal related stuff will be posted on http://douggie.leiseus.net and quick reviews will be posted on http://twitter.com/Douggie. That’s the format for now.

And yes, there will be an artwork gallery in the feature, but I’m still thinking whether I will use DeviantArt for that or not. I like community-aspects. But I also like to have my own website with my own looks.

Talking about own looks, that reminds me to change something about this site!

Doug

Will It Blend is such a wierd site, where they try to put stuff into a blender – and I don’t mean food – and try to see whether the blender can takes it or not. Things like a baseball, iPhone and even a Guitar Hero guitar! They have stuff categorized by “Try this at home” and “Don’t try this at home”, as if they encrouage people to put stuff into their blender other than food! I wonder if you can ever put anything eatable once plastic has been blended. I also wonder how long it actually takes to blend these objects as the videos are all cut and not one-shots.

As you can see from the logo, it’s powered by BlendTec, the brand that makes the TotalBlender, and as you can guess, this is a viral marketing site. The Wikipedia-entry is pretty interesting to read, as it seems that this guy has quite a following!

For those who don’t know yet, Kings of Power 4 Billion has just arrived. Kings of Power 4 Billion is a short animated movie by Paul Robertson, which is part of Mechafutus (or at least posts entries in that awesome VISUBLOG). He is an artists who draws pixelart in 16-bit and while his work looks really interesting (I love pixelart) I’m always disappointed in the execution. The build-up is a bit messy and the music always seems to be non-fitting as if it’s just slapped over it in the end. I guess I just miss sound effects which makes the interaction between all the character and objects possible.

Nevertheless, it’s better than his previous work, Pirate Baby’s Cabana Battle Street Fight 2006, which was cool to look at, but really boring as hell. As if you’re looking at boring gameplay footage of two guys who almost never get his. In this one the music seems to be synched better and there’s “non-gameplay-looking-footage”, which gives parts a more cinematic and dramatic effect. Also, it has more text!

Anyway, here’s the trailer:

And you can download the movie from one of his links in his Livejournal-entry about the release of Kings of Power 4 Billion. Too bad the compression is a bit crappy (it is hard though), because in pixelart you actually want to see the (hard) pixels and all you see now are blurry edges.

Oh, just for the sake of it, here’s Pirate Baby’s Cabana Battle Street Fight 2006:

This guy should just get all his sprites and backgrounds together and make a game out of it. He has done so much I believe that’s possible!

For those who look foor their little place on the web for free, here’s a good hosting company – or at leat I heard so from friends. Sorry I don’t have direct experience with it, but I heard the service is good and you get some hosting elements which are usually only to be found in paid hosting services, like PHP, MySQL and POP3 e-mail. But you can all attach it to your own domain name (which doesn’t cost much nowadays). So this is useful if you’re living in a country like mine, where hosting is way too expensive and most people don’t have a creditcard to get their hosting done in other countries.

Oh yeah, it is called 000webhost, which sounds like one of those illegal hijacked domains… but give it a chance! You might like the fact that you can finally put on your own CMS, blog, wiki, webshop, etc. on it!

So how cool is this? Well, if you got some interesting books that and of course some empty spots to fill on your walls.
Also, you could use this trick to stack anything you like, like DVDs, CDs, boxes, whatever! Just use your imagination!

Okay, maybe not..

I have not used the Line Rider program at all, nor did I read the Wikipedia-entry. But as fas as I understand, it’s a program where you draw a level and there’s this automated play when the play is pressed. So my knowledge doesn’t bring you very far as in what Line Rider is about, but I do know that there are some awesome movies in YouTube, like the following one where the first level of Super Mario Bros. is remade and even set up with sound effects:

There are also Tutorial videos for those interested (which I didn’t watch). Also, this guy has some really neat ones. And for the sake of filling my journal with unnessecary YouTube-embeds, here is another one!

Have fun!

Well, a program called Unlocker searches for the programs that currently are “using” that file you want to move/delete/overwrite/whatever when you right-click on that file and choose “unlocker” and also gives you the option to end that program.

Really handy stuff, especially now I’ve noticed that it is explorer.exe which is the cause of all the move and delete problems on my computer.

So the GDEC-chord combination got me searching through the Internet, trying to find some theories about that. I stumbled across this Stand-up comedian who talks about Pachelbel’s Canon in D and all the songs that uses the same chords!

Using that chord combination is of course an instant win, as everybody likes that combination, but the guy kinda smuggles (like U2’s “With or Without You” is clearly GDEC – I think) and uses some songs that use the GDAC-chord combination, instead of the DABF#GDGA (which incidentally has the first 3 chords if you shift it to GDEBCGCD).

The Digg-entry had a link to this: The History of Pop Music in Four Notes, which is a guy who does the same, but with the GDEC-chord combination. The Digg-entry has got some interesting comments, where I will quote one (Imushi):

“It’s cute but it’s not accurate. It WORKS but it’s not “right” – the melodic lines Fit over the chords but do not necessarily have the same Harmonic Progression in actual context. An example is Adam’s song which has a verse progression of I – IV – vi – IV, which is in fact close to the I – V – vi – IV he’s using, close enough to make it sound like it works, and it works. But it’s fudging the truth.

Yeah though, I – V – vi – IV is wildly popular. It won prom king AND queen.”

This is what sort of explains my take on some of the Pachelbel crossover song smuggling in Rob Paravonian’s video!

It’s just too bad that these are artists with hard-to-get-albums, making me go to their sites to check out their music – which is what I quite often do at work when listening to music.

One of these artists is Emily Picha and of course she has a MySpace-account and a official page. The song above is pretty good and it reminds me of Thao Nguyen’s Tallymarks.

But I guess that’s beause it uses the famous GDEC chord combination (or a variation on it) which make everything sounds good!

I had a talk with a friend a few days ago about (hiphop) beat production. Nowadays there are a lot of people who can make beats (or other music as well, but I’m talking about beats because they’re short segments which are looped over and over) – or at least who think they can make beats. Check out the next movie – and one of the comments stating that it is a “waste of equipment” is quite right. Still, it is funny watch though, not only the beat he creates is silly, but also his whole way of talking is as if I’m back in the 8th grade! Fifteen minutes beat can never be good…

That night I watched a documentary called “The Beat Kings”, which is probably one of the worst shot documentaries – in terms of sound and picture quality, also editing-wise – but in terms of information it is pretty interesting. These are producers who are responsible for classics like Marley Marl, Pete Rock, Premier, RZA and some more names. It’s interesting to see how they started and what equipment they used to have. One of the things most of them mentioned is that beat-making (or music-making) is so easy nowadays with programs like Pro Tools (or Reason or whatever you have), but like they’re saying and what is evidented by the “producer” in the movie up, it is not what you use and what technology have in your hands, but it is what comes out from it.

The documentary is pretty interesting, but with the drawback that it is 45 minutes only and the production value is pretty low (I mean, they are interviewing Swizz outside in front of his car and Kanye is interviewed in an empty echo-filled room – what were they thinking?). So if you can get your hands on it (or string together all the Youtube movies together from beat kings – check the “related movies on the right”), take a look at it!

It’s pretty cool for people who want to let the world know what they’re doing: it’s easy to update your Twitter through SMS, so if you have a mobile phone it’s updatable anywhere. But of course, it can be used for other stuff as well: writing down your thoughts, reporting events at events/happenings or even reporting certain updates in your site which don’t require a whole new post. Of course I won’t use it to report my what I’m eating or which underwear I’m trying to choose from, but I’ll try to create status updates of the site.

For those who don’t know abandonware, they’re basically games that are not owned or copyrighted anymore. These are mostly games from the old PC era and games from consoles that have obsolete technologies. It’s a bit of a grey area, but sites like Abandonia or Home of the Underdogs offer abandonware for download. It’s pretty cool, because you get to see all the cool games old-school gamers like me had to play. Unfortunately, there are still companies like LucasArts

If you’ve got time you should try out Nyet III, which is one of the best Tetris-variants ever made. It’s a game with all sort of short Tetris challenges, combines with item-use!

Anyway, where I wanted to go to is the following: from a post at the forum of insert credit I’ve found a site called AbandonGames, only for doujin games. Even though you should of course get them through legal means if possible (like buying them through sites like Palet Mail or Himeya), DoujinStyle is truly useful for games that are really hard to get, especiallly outside Japan.
